The following is a genealogy for the Randolphs from 860 AD to 1975.
It includes branches for the Johnsons, Millers, Wrights, Johnsons,
Fitzgeralds, Stranges, Gambills, Claytons, and many more.
It was researched and created by Clarence A. Randolph of Kansas City
at 83 years of age. Scanned, OCRed and hand corrected and posted by
John Marshall Dudley.
Note that the original was quite light, and that capital letters were almost
impossible to read, leading to over 50% error on them with the OCR. Also other
letters/numbers were confused often by the OCR, primarily "a" and "e", and ALL
"3"s were converted to "5"s. I have gone through the entire document and
attempted to find and fix all these errors. Also some typing was over ring
binder holes, and I have reconstructed the missing letters where possible.
Where something was illegable I have put in either "?" or [????] to indicate
that something was impossible to decipher.

Roman Catholics) He made himself independent of Harold of Norway,
made expeditions to Scotland, England and Flanders, and about 912
established himself in northern France. He became the first Duke of

and used interchangeably as relating to the same person or family.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT ALLIED LINES REFERRD TO BUT NO DEVELOPED:
On page - l - Paragraph (7), above, we refer to George washington as a
decendant also of Eudo. The author of "Fitz Randolph Traditions" states that
our first president "... was descended from Leonard Washington of Warton,
county of Lancaster ... whose son Laurence emigrated to America in l659 and
settled in Virginia. Leonard's ancestor was Robert Washington, Lord of hil-
bourne, county of Westmoreland, of the time of Henry III, whose descent is
traced ... to Bonde, lord of Washington-Juxta-Ravensworth, to whom his father,
... gave the manor of Washington in the time of King Stephen."
On page - 2 - Paragraph (17), we state that Richard Milhous Nixon, 37th
president of the United States, was a descendant of King Edward III through
Joan Beaufort, 2nd wife of Ralph (or Randolph) de Neville.
It was recently pointed out by Mr. Denis Hart in the Magazine section of
The Kansas City Star that genealogists had traced the descent of both Wash-
-ington and Nixon to King Edward III, of England, citing as authority
"Burke's Presidential Families of the United States of America". He states:
"... his mother, Hannah Milhous, daughter of Franklin Milhous, son of Elizabeth
Griffith, daughter of Amos Griffith, son of Lydia Hussey, whose mother, Hiriam,
was the daughter of John Harry, son of Hugh Harry, who emigrated from Wales
to America on the Vine.
"Hugh's father, Harry Owen, had become a Quaker. Harry was the son of
Thomas Owen of Machynlleth, son of Elizabeth Pugh, whose mother Gaynor
Thomas was the daughter of Jane Puleston, daughter of Sir John Puleston,
Sheriff of Caernavonshire, son of Eleanor Whitney, daughter of Constance
Tuchet, whose mother... Eleanor Holand, was the ... daughter of Edmund de
Boland Earl of Kent and Constance of York, daughter of lsabel of Castile
and Edmund of Langley Duke of York, son of Edward III. ..."

to time over many years by Cousin Fan Cochran, of Oklahoma City, and her
husband Paul on trips to Mississippi, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia,
where they interviewed relatives and others, and otherwise examined public
records relating to the probation of estates of deceased relatives.

Genealogy; (c) the findings of Mr. W. E. Cridlin, a professional genealo~
gist of Richmond, Va., as the "probable ancestors of Joseph Randolph,
set forth in a letter of Valcour Randolph McDonald of July 27, l954; (d)
photostatic copy of Cousin Edna Walthall Alerander's application to DAR
based upon our Joseph Randolph's Revolutionary War record; and (e) mis-

Alexander Cunningham, and to others in her family and to her from other
cousins.
5. We are indebted to Cousin Louise Crowder, of Chester, S. C., and to Cousin
Lucy Howard, of Athens, Ca., whose ancestors, as we believe, were Joseph
F. Randolph (4th) and his first wife, Mary Laing (laying), for many of the
items upon which we rely as proof of the correctness of our revised out~
line, which they sent to Cousin Fan Cochran and by her to me. They are
cousins of each other through their common ancestor, Joshua Hammond Ran-
dolph. They and the deceased sisters of one of them have worked tirelessly
for many years to establish an unbroken line between our Joseph Randolph
and the emigrant William Randolph, of Turkey Island. One or more of them
collaborated with my brother, Rev. John Anthony Randolph, Chaplain in the
United States army, during the late teens and early l920s. Many of these
documents will be referred to and analyzed in Discussion of the Evidence.
6. Cousin Jerry F. Randolph, M. D., of Memphis, Tenn., furnished the names
of his family and that of Peyton Callahan Randolph, his Great Grandfather.
He had previously engaged a genealogist to trace his ancestry, who in
1975 had produced a very interesting and significant outline which supports
paragraph (17) of ours, above. This will be discussed at length.
7 My Grand Niece, Katherine Wright (now Mrs. H. C. Dudley), of Mayfield,
Ky., has not only furnished the detailed information as to her own, her
brother's and sisters' families, but also of her Aunt Valcour Randolph
McDonald's, her Uncle Vivien's, and even much of her Great Uncle James
Rufus Randolph's daughters' families.
8. My Nieces, Valcour Clayton Smith, of Booneville, Helen Clayton Ritter, of
Amory, and my Grand niece, Vera Trantham Walters, of aberdeen, all of the

DISCUSSION OF THE EVIDENCE
Without "Fitz Randolph Treditions", published in l907 by Lewis V. Fitz
Randolph, it is extremely doubtful that we would ever have established a
connected outline of our ancestry, which we have set forth above. We will
discuss certain important aspects of it in connection with other vital issues
In the l930s I received a letter from Mr. Robert Isham Randolph, of
Chicago, stating that he had just written a book entitled "The Randolphs
of Virginia" and that I was named in it. I ordered a copy and studied it
carefully. My name was NOT in it. Neither did it contain the name of any
of my antecedents recognizable to me. It contained only the so called Vir-
ginia Randolph clan. About l972 my Grandson Ailliam L. Randolph, who with
his wife Betsy live in Annapolis, Md., sent me for Christmas a recently
published book also entitled "Tne Randolphs of Virginia", by Jonathan Dan-
iels. While I was glad to get it, I found it also was an account of the
Virginia Randolph line, in narrative form, giving Robert lsham's book as `
one of the sources. It had an outline in the front of the book beginning
with William Randolph, of Turkey Island, and Mary Isham, of Bermuda Hundred,
and following their children for several generations, like Robert Isham's
book did, but did not mention any of our forebears.
After a study of these books it became vividly clear to me that neither
book furnished the necessary peg on which our branch of the Randolph family
could hang its genealogical hat.
While I had had the "Fitz Randolph Traditions" book so long I didn't
remember when or where I got it, and had read it, I had seen nothing in it
that even remotely suggested that it was an outline of our family's ances-
try. However, when Cousin Fan Cochran sent me the photostatic copy of the
Document listed 4(a), above, which Cousin louise Crowder had previously
sent her, I felt that we had the missing link to our line of ancestry. The
pertinent parts of this document are:
"Laura Randolph (Mrs. Gideon Ferry Comer) 2209 Woodford Place, Louisville,
Kentucky, born in Constantine, Breckenridge County, Kentucky,
Descendant of Edward Fitz Randolph, who settled in barnstable, Massachusetts,
through the Revolutionary Patriot Joseph Fitz Randolph (4) of North
Carolina and Georgia, as follows:
i. John Thurman Randolph (Oct. 30, l8l6-Oct, 9, 1884, m. Nov. l3, 1842,
Mary Jane Holbert (Dec. 28, l826-May 24, 1885)
2. Peyton Skipwith Randolph (...l792-Jan. l9, l867) m. l5l5
Elizabeth N. Fields (...l796-Apr. l2, l873)
3. Joseph Fitz Randolph (4) (Jan. l6, l750·aft. l808) m. (l)
Mary Laying. m. (2) Filia Turnan (...aft. l805)
4. Joseph Fitz Randolph (5) (Mar. 24, l722-...l782) m. abt. 1742,
Esther Broderick.
5. Joseph Fitz Randolph (2) (Feb. ll, l69l-l749) m. abt. l7l4,
Rebekah Drake (Nov. 2l, l697-...l749).
6. Joseph Fitz Randolph (Mar. l, l656-...l726) m. Jan. 16, 1688,
Hannah Conger ... 1670-...) ,
7. Edward Fitz Randolph (bet. l607/1614-...1675) m. May lO, l637,
Elizabeth Blossom (...l620~...l7l3).
Edward Fitz Randolph came from Nottinghamshire, England and settled at
Scituate in l636. He was admitted to church May l4, l637; Freeman Septem-
ber 4, 1638. Edward and his wife Elizabeth left Massachusetts and settled
in East New Jersey. Joseph Fitz Randolph (4) (l750-aft. 1808) was in South-
ern Infantry of Colonel Sam Hopkins, Soldiers of the Va. Line."
---- C ----
Cousin Louise Crowder wrote two letters to Cousin Fan Cochran concerning
the above document which Cousin Laura Randolph Comer had apparently sent her.
One letter bore only the date "Tuesday". she stated in it that she had gotten
the "Fitz Randolph Traditions" book, and said "... from the dates that this
Joseph Fitz Randolph who d. in Plainfield, N. J. in l8Ol could not POSSIBLY
be our Joseph who d. in S. C. - N. Ga. area AFTER l808", saying she had a
copy of a will made in Elbert Co., Ga., by Thos. Turman in l8O8 mentioning
Joseph Randolph and James Reed (sons - in - law).
According to the chart at the end of the book "Fitz Randolph Traditions",
the record to which she refers, Joseph F. Randolph (3rd), our Joseph's father,
was born Mar. 24, l722, who had a son Jacob E. Randolph, pastor of the First
Baptist Church of Plainfield, N. J. As to our Joseph (4th}, it states that he
married Jan. 8, l772, "Mary Laing born at Plainfield, 8 mo. l2 day, l753".
There is no statement as to WHERE our Joseph DIED. lt does say that he died
Nov. ll, l80l. While if this date is correct l don't think it necessarily rules
him out as our ancestor, l'm satisfied that other strong documentary proof
definitely shows the author was mistaken as to this date. This Joseph was the
author's great grandfather who died, regardless of the date, long hefore the
author was born in 1838. Both Josephs, if there were two, were born in 1750.
All parties concede our Joseoh died after 1808, including the Joseph Fitz
Randolph (4) in Document 4(a), discussed next above. Some give this date as
1810 (Application to DAR by Cousin Edna Walthall Alexander and her daughter,
Cousin Fan Cochran). So the date in the book could well be a typographical
error in transposing the last two digits. Whether he died in l801, after l8O8,
or 1810, was of no concern to the author, just as it was immaterial to him
that this Joseph was married later to our ancestress. His only concern was to
show that this Joseph was a necessary link in his ancestry. An examination of
names and dates in the text of this book and a comparison of them with those
in the genealogical outline near the end of the book, which outline we have
reproduced in somewhat more detail above, will disclose many discrepancies in
names and dates, though not of a vital nature.
Documment 4{a) also places Joseph Fitz Randolph (4) in North Carolina and
Georgia", where it is conceded that our Joseph Fitz Randolph was last known to
live. Cousin Louise's second letter was dated Feb. ll, l956, in which she said:
"My descent is through Joseph's first wife who was - well she could have been
Mary Laing of Mass. even if he was of the Va. Randolphs...". ln a preceding
paragraph she said she had heard from another descendant of Joseph in Louis-
ville, Ky., "..,and she says that they have connected our Joseph to the new
England FITZ-RANDOLPHS. I enclose a copy of the material she sent me.,.".
She further states: "I feel that the Wm. Randolph of Turkey Island is our
line but have no proof and cannot connect the two lines". She begins this
letter: "It was really a joy and a comfort, too, to know others have been
stumped' as it were, but (by?} the elusive ancestry of our JOSEPH".
Any lingering doubt that our Joseph and the Joseph Fitz Randolph(4) are
one and the same man will vanish, I believe, when we consider the letter of
Dec. 29, 1960, of Mrs. Peyton E. Randolph (DAR #47l658), of Plainview, Texas,
to Mrs. R. B. Cunningham, of Booneville, Miss. Mrs. Cunningham was the de-
ceased older sister of Cousin Fan Cochran. ln that letter Mrs. Randolph states:
"You note that Joseph Randolph signed himself, Camden Co. Ga., tax list in
l794 as J. F. Randolph. (my query brought an overwhelming number or letters
from Fitz~Randolphs all over the United states. One lady who sounded very
authentic gave hope to my theory that some Fitz-Randolphs from New Jersey or
Tenn., or N. Y., came into Va. and either dropped the Fitz name, used the F
before the Randoloh; or either married with the Va. Randolphs; any way, she
said that the Fitz was dropped about l800. Another Fitz-Randolph wrote
that the Fitz was dropped by some families as early as the l600s)". She also
states: "... John Anthony Randolph, Purdy, Tenn., from Virkus, Volume l, in
my first letter didn't attempt to prove right back to William of Turkey
Island, though he stated that he was a descendant of him".
---- D ----
The "Virkus, Volume l", she refers to is Document 4(b), p. 353 of the
Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy, in our above "Sources and bibliog-
raphy", which states: "Randolph, John Anthony, b. at Purdy, Tenn., Mar. 16,
1859, Desc. Col. William Randolph (qv); and thru: 4 - Joseph (b. Spotsylva-
nia Co., Va., 1750, soldier Am. Rev., m. 2nd, l785,----Turman)", etc.
John Anthony Randolph's daughter, Velcour Randolph McDonald, wrote the
mother of Cousin Fan Cochran on July 27, 1954, concerning the report to her
father by the genealogist, Mr. W. E. Cridlin, of Richmond, Va., who had been
engaged to trace our ancestry. A photostatic copy of this letter and report
is listed as 4(c) on page A of Sources and bibliography, above. While his find-
ings were inconclusive, she saying in her letter, "I am sending you the
names he supplied as the probable ancestors of Joseph Randolph", she also
stated, "From all the information available, Mr. Cridlin felt sure the Spot-
sylvania Randolphs were from the Edward Randolph side". He doubtless was re-
ferring to the Edward Randolph listed by both Robert Isham Randolph and Jon-
athan Daniels in their respective books on "The Randolphs of Virginia" as the
8th child of William Randolph of Turkey Island and Mary Isham of Bermuda Run-
dred, who married Elizabeth Graves, rather than the Edward Fitz Randolph who
emigrated from Nottinghamshire, Eng., and married Elizabeth Blossom. More
about Mr. 0ridlin's "Edward" below.
Without any attempt to connect our Joseph with this Edward or anyone
else, Mr. Cridlin lists as "probable forebears: I. Nicholas Randolph, of
Spotsylvania Co. and Margaret his wife. II. William Randolph, born in Spot-
sylvania but living in Mecklenburg in l780, and Susanna his wife. He was a
Revolutionary soldier. III. Joseph Randolph, born in l75l but living in Meck-
lenburg in 1780. "In 1782 there were 4 in family including himself. His eld-
est son, John, was 16 in l789. Left Mecklenburg between l794 and l796."
I find no Nicholas Randolph in the index to Robert lsham Randolph's
book on the Virginia Randolphs. I find no William Randolph in either index
who married a Susanna. The Joseph Randolph who was a son of William Randolph
of Turkey Island and Mary lsham died without issue. There was a Joseph Wil
liamson Randolph who married a Tucker. No Turman, Thurman or Turenan, is in
either index. nor is a laing or laying listed.
Although Mr. Cridlin does not connect Joseph Randolph in Ill. with II or
I, the above quoted part of III literally coincides with our outline, except
he was born in 1750 instead of l75l. For, in 1782 there were Joseph, his wife
Mary Laing (laying), John (Capt. Jack) Randolph, born in 1775, who was 16 in
1789, and Joseph T. Randolph (5th), born in 1776 (The ancestor of lewis V.
Fitz Randolph, the author of Ritz Randolph Traditions}. Moreover, our Joseph
left Mecklenburg in 1794 and signed the tax list in Camden Co., Ga., as
Joseph E. Randolph, as seen above.
Coming back to Mr. 0ridlin's feeling sure that our Joseph Randolph came
from the Edward Randolph side, if this is the case it is contrary to what we
thought or assumed for many years: that we were descended from the Pocahontas-
John Rolfe line. That was the line of Richard Randolph, the 5th child of William
Randolph of Turkey lsland and wife, who married Jane tolling.
The contention, or assumption, over the years that our Joseph Randolph and
we are descended from William Randolph of Turkey lsland and Mary Isham of Ber-
muda Hundred will not stand close scrutiny. All seem to agree that Joseph Ran-
dolph was our common ancestor and that he was born in 1750. William Randolph of
Turkey lsland was born in l65l in England and married Mary lsham in Va. in 1680
They had eight children who married and had issue: l. William Randolph, born in
l68l. He married Elizabeth Beverly in 1705. They had no son or descendant named
Joseph. besides, this William died in l741, nine years before Joseph was born.
---- E ----
This William and Elizebeth Randolph were the ancestors of Mary-Anne
Custis who married Robert E. Lee, who was a descendant also of Elizaoeth Ran
dolph, the 6th child of William of Turkey Island and Mary Isham Randolph,
2. Thomas Randolph, born in 1683. In l7l2 he married Judith Fleming. They
had descendents but none named Joseph. Thomas died in 1730. This is the line
of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United Stetes.
3. lsham Randolph, born in 1685 and died in 1742. he married Jane Rogers.
Their daughter Jane Randolph married Peter Jefferson end they were the parents
of Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United stares. Obviously, our Joseph
Randolph born in l75O does not fit into this line.
4. Sir John Randolph, born in l693 and died in l757. He married Susanna
Beverly. Their son Peyton Randolph (1721 ~ l775), first Presldent of the
Continentel Congrees, married Elizabeth Harrison, but thelr issue did not
persist. Another son of Sir John was John Randolph (l727 - 1784) married
Arlene Jennings. Their son Edmund Randolph (l753 - l8l3), who was Governor of
Virginia, Secretary of State of U. S. A. and Attorney General of U. S. A. He
married Elizebeth Nicholes. Sir John's early death rules him our as our Joseph's
father. We are unable to find that John, his son who fathered Edmund in
1735 was the father of our Joseph. Nor can we claim that this last John was
our ancestor instead of Joseph. There is no evidence that this John Randolph
married twice, or had sons named John(Cepi. Jack) Randolph, or Peyton Skip-
with Randolph, or a grandson named John Thurgen {Turman] Randolph.
5. Richard Randolph (1690 - 1742) married Jane Bolling. Richard springs
from John Rolfe and Pocahontas and are the progenitors of John Randolph of
Roanoke who never married. We show elsewhere that two genealogists have dem-
onstrated that Richard Randolph was not our ancestor.
6. Ellzebeih Randolph died in l7l9. She married Richard Bland in 1701 as
his 2nd wife. He was born in l665 and died in l720. Their son was Richard
Bland (l7lO ~ l776). This Richard married Anne Poythress (l7l2 - l758}. They
had l2 children, none of whom married a Randolph male. .
7. Mary Randolph, born in l692. She married John Stith in l7l2. Their son
William Stith (...-l755) married Judith Randolph of Tuckehoe. No daughter of
either of these two marriages married a Randolph prior to l750.
8. Edward Randolph married Elizabeth Graves, of Bristol, Tn;. They had a
son, Joeeph Randolph, who died without issue. They had other children but
none mentioned as named Joseph.
9, Henry Randolph died without issue.
Any notion that our branch of Randolphs descended from the so called Virginia
Randolph line is definitely and affirmatively disproved by the genealogist's
outline which was recently produced by a geneaologiet whom Cousin Jerry ?,
Randolph, M. D., of Memphis, employed to trace his ancestry. Dr. Randolph sent me
a copy of the product early this year. It is entitled: "Forehears, Volume XVI,
Number l, winter l973 A Royal Descent: LOUIS IX, KING & SAINT". It covers 25
generations, beginning with st. Louis IX, King of Frence, born in l226, and
ends with 25. Elizabeth Burnley Bentley "born New York City 7 July l934", This
line at Paragraph 7 crosses our line at Paragraph (17). Said Paragraph 7
states:
"7. Joan Beaufort, died 13 November l440, married es his second wife,
before 3 February 1396/7, Sir Ralph Neville, Knight of the Garter,
first Earl of Westmoreland, born ca 1346, died 1425, Son of John
Neville, third Lord Neville of Raby".
Paragraph 16 of that line covers the l6th generation of the line of the afore-
said LOUIS IX, as follows:
Colonel William Randolph, born Warwickshire l65l, died Virginia
l7ll, came to the Colony of Virginia ca l660, settled at "Turkey
Island"... married Mary lshem of "Bermuda Hundred", who was the
23rd generation in the line of descent from Henry I, King of France.
This genealogiet named as the head of the l7th generation Thomas Randolph, the
2nd son of William and Mary Randolph, who married Judith Fleming and were the
ancestors of Chief Justice John Marshall, as we have already shown, above.
---- F ----
This, of course, is the Virginia Randolph line. Now, when we go back to our
Paragraph (17) we see that while Ralph (or Randolph) de Neville through his
second wife, Joen Beaufort, was a progenitor of the Virginia Randolph clan,
he through his first wife Margaret (daughter of Hugo, Lady stafford - de-
scended from King Edward I), was the progenitor of our Randolph line. The too
lines diverged at that point. What better proof could we have?
Here, as stated above, the genealogist chose Thomas Randolph of the eight
children of William Randolph of Turkey Island and Mary lsham of Bermuda Hun-
dred. When it is considered that he was engaged by Dr. Jerry Randolph to con-
nect up his line of ancestry, we feel we may safely assume that the other
seven children who bore issue did not lead to our Joseph, who was also Dr.
Jerry's ancestor. This would seem to rule out the descendents of Ricnard Ran-
dolph end Jane Bolling of the John Randolph end Pocehontes line, as well as
all other descendants of said William and Mary Randolph Virginia line. This
genealogist's conclusion would seem to overrule that of Mr. Cridlin who seemed
to think that Edward Randolph, the 8th child of said William and Mary, and
his wife Elizabeth, were our ancestors. I notice that among his "References",
Dr. Jerry's geneslogist does not mention "Fitz Randolph Traditions", and al-
though in his Paragraph 7 he says that Joan Beaufort was the second wife of
Ralph Neville, he makes no mention of Margaret, his first wife, who we feel
we have shown was the ancestress of our Randolph line.
Conclusion
As we end this analysis end discussion, I apologize for the many details
and great length of it. However, I am aware of the several notions as to who
our ancestors are. The variance has revolved principally around the identity
of our Joseph Randolph and his two wives. I felt that entire fairness to all
concerned required that I present the side of those who in the past expressed
doubts as to our Joseph being a Fitz Randolph with Fitz Randolph forbears,
although "Fitz" means only "son of". I have quoted at length from various
documents and letters as the only way I felt I could convey their previously
expressed views of documentary end other evidence - not in the least to be
critical. Their statements and opinions have been constructive and helpful,
and I am sure are welcomed by all. These members of our branch of the Ran-
dolph family have worked long years and effectively to solve our problems,
and have furnished documentary evidence without which our above revised Out-
line would not have been possible. They are entitled to full credit.
Instead of basking in the reflected limelight of certain Virginia immor-
tals, we may instead feel extraordinery pride in what appears to be a fact --
that we are descended from a long line of kings and queens and nobility of
England, Scotland, and Continentel Europe, extending back more then a thou-
sand years. Moreover, our forebears were among the crusaders, the conquerors
in the Battle of Hastings, those wresting the Magna Charta from King John,
and those, although Christiens since the time of Rolf the Norsemen Conqueror,
fought Kings and church alike for religious freedom, also, some of our fore-
bears were progenitors of two presidents of the United States. we have shown
that the original Virginia Randolphs end Fitz Randolphs mingled together for
several generations, probably intermarried, and the latter dropped the Fitz
from their names. lt is also reasonable to conclude that they adopted the
use of certain Virginia Randolph names, such as Isham, Peyton, Skipwith,
and perhaps others.
