This is my story but since I was only three years old, I only have sporatic
and vague memories. I am relying on the memories of my family, including ex-
tened family of aunts, uncles, and so on. The story has been told often.
When I was three, I had a high fever, listlessness and weakness in my sore, stiff muscles. My parents took me to our pediatrician and, given the symptoms presented, he ordered a spinal tap. He then allowed my parents to take me home until the results were obtained from the lab.
Now I was beginning to have further symptoms of muscle weakness and was losing my ability to walk: I would begin to walk and then fall down. My Mother put me to bed as soon as we got home. She had bought a doll for my birthday which was a few weeks away, but she brought it to the bed and gave it to me early. I had such a high fever and listlessness I didn't feel like playing with it----it just lay in the bed beside me while I looked at it.
Mother went to the living room, got on her knees by the sofa and asked God to heal me.
After prayer, she made a few phone calls to family and then went back into the bedroom to check on me. My fever had broken and I was sitting up in bed playing with the doll. I never, ever had any further fever during this time.
The doctor called and said the test was positive, I had polio.
But I had no further symptoms nor did I have any paralysis. The physician was surprised but he recommended, to be cautious, that I have physical therapy. We followed his recommendation and I had a few sessions of physical therapy, but I was a healthy, lively toddler from then on.
